A third-generation miniature artist, Riyaz Uddin began painting in Rajasthani, Mughal and Deccan styles at the age of 13. Ever since, he has earned a reputation for design excellence, painting with rich natural pigments and gold accents that honour history and centuries of tradition with each stroke. Anthology's creative director has developed a relationship with Riyaz Uddin over many years, and we wanted to translate his exceptional talent onto a new canvas––iron trays hand-painted by Riyaz Uddin and his associate in the age-old tradition of karkhana painting. In one series, they explore flowering trees from various Indian painting traditions. In another, they recreate the famous painting of Maharaja Yeshwant Holkar II by the French artist Bernard Boutet de Monvel. And in the third, Riyaz paints a stylised serpent that winds itself across the tray's surface as a symbol of fertility and prosperity across cultures.
